I was just reviewing my book, “How to Build the Martial Arts School of Your Dreams,” when I stumbled across a passage I once wrote about self-fulfilling prophecies.
Quite honestly, it inspired me to pass the message along to you now, as I sit here in my study, enjoying a delicious Sunday morning cappuccino.
(I make one heck of a cappuccino.)
Anyhow, Robert Merton conceptualized the notion of the self-fulfilling prophecy in 1957. It occurs when “a false definition of the situation evokes a new behavior which makes the original false conception come true.”
Translation – when you set an expectation, even if it isn’t accurate, your actions tend to become consistent with that expectation. Often, the result is that the expectation comes true.
For example, if you constantly tell yourself that you can’t get into shape, then you will probably never get into shape. The same applies to business and virtually anything else. You’ll literally come up with one excuse after the next that will somehow hold you back.
“Argue for your weaknesses, and they’re yours,” says world-renowned psychologist Dr. Stephen Covey.
However, the reverse of this also holds true, and it’s just as powerful.
Make yourself believe that you are going to succeed at whatever you are intending to accomplish, and you will greatly increase your chances for success. In my interviews with Brian Tracy, Tony Robbins, Tom Hopkins, Zig Ziglar, Jay Abraham, Lee Milteer and other brilliant educators…they all reiterated the importance of this.
Ultimately, we become what we think about most. In other words, our thoughts become our realities.
Amazing how this works….
That’s why it is so critically important that you fill your mind with thoughts about your strengths, opportunities, victories and potentials… rather than your weaknesses, missed opportunities, failures or limitations.
It’s not easy, but I work at this every single day. I encourage you to do the same.
You see, I learned from many different “masters,” with whom I’ve had personal dealings…YOUR THOUGHTS WILL SHAPE YOUR FUTURE.
It’s absolutely true.
Furthermore, you’ll always find a way to subconsciously create the evidence that supports your claims, whether those claims will help you or hurt you.
So think positive thoughts and abolish the negative ones. Work smart, work hard and believe in yourself. You’ll put yourself on the fast track to success.
